PapalVisit.Ph launched at the 3rd Catholic Social Media Summit

LINGAYEN DAGUPAN, Pangasinan — At least 1,200 delegates from all over the country participated in the two-day social media confab hailed as the 3rd Catholic Social Media Summit (#CSMSv3) last September 13 to 14 at the Pangasinan Training Complex and Development Center, Capitol Complex in Lingayen, Pangasinan, Philippines.

DAY 1

Michael Angelo Lobrin, a sought-after Catholic inspirational author of the best-selling book ‘Laugh with God Today’ presented before-and-now realities of living and communicating among people especially the youth. In his presentation ‘Beyond Jesus’ Post,’ he said “you must bring God everywhere — to everyone — using the social media.” He also added, “pwede naman natin gamitin ang Facebook o ang Twitter para maghatid ng ngiti at kasiyahan sa mga tao.” Lobrin moderates his own Facebook Page where he presents a creative way of evangelizing — by posting funny stories while drawing its followers to God. His Facebook fan page have reached more than ten thousand likes as of today.

Most Reverend Socrates Villegas, DD, archbishop of Lingayen-Dagupan and current president of the CBCP, talked about “The Online Samaritan and His Digital Neighbours.” While social media has become an integral part of our daily life, Archbishop Villegas said that “prayer should be part of it.” ”Before we use our computers and our phones, bago man lang tayo mag-connect sa wi-fi, may I humbly ask all of you to make a sign of the cross. This is to help you remind yourself that you have a deeper purpose when using the internet,”he added. He also said that the”internet is God’s gift to humanity” and “we should use it to glorify God and not one’s self.

On the other hand, David Panlilio of OneBillionStories.com shares how we can use stories in video for evangelization, too.

The summit have also conducted different workshops for the delegates like creating images and graphics for social media evangelization, creating videos and animations to communicate the Catholic faith, and expressing Catholic faith and beliefs through articles and content writing. The workshops were held simultaneously in different venues within the Pangasinan Capitol complex.

To end the first day of the summit, a fellowship over dinner and cultural presentations were sponsored by the the Provincial Government of Lingayen to promote camaraderie and friendship among delegates.Different Philippine folk dances and narration of Pangasinan’s rich history and culture were all shown in that evening. The said fellowship and cultural night was held at the Sison Auditorium just within the vicinity of the Capitol.

DAY 2

One of the highlights of the event is the launching of the official Papal visit site at the summit on the second day. Sky Ortigas, head of Youth Pinoy, together with Teresa Tunay and Rommel Lopez present the official Papal Visit website (http://papalvisit.ph) to start the Day 2 of the Summit. They also informed the audience that the official hashtag to be used for the coming of Pope Francis in the Philippines is hashtag #PapalVisitPH. The hashtag will used for any related posts on Papal’s visit and to join the conversation online. The website aims to give the latest news and updates and other multimedia resources about the coming of Pope Francis next year in the Philippines.

Lastly, veteran media practitioner, TV and theatre actor Bro. Bernard Canaberal have also graced the summit. He discussed about how we can create a culture of authentic relationships. He said “man’s first instinct is to communicate.” He said that the most important thing about our social connections in this time and age is to create an authentic human relationship in the real world — where each one love each other as brothers and sisters, respect and care to one another to communicate our faith. As we remember last January of this year, Pope Francis’ first message for World Communications Day was that “communication must promote culture of encounter” and it offers a profoundly personal and Franciscan vision of the way that modern media technology must help us, not just to connect virtually, but to promote a real encounter with people and ideas that are often very different from own. Pope Francis also said, “it is not enough to be passersby on the digital highways, simply “connected”; connections need to grow into true encounters. We cannot live apart, closed in on ourselves. We need to love and to be loved. We need tenderness. Media strategies do not ensure beauty, goodness and truth in communication.” This has become the overall theme of the summit: The Encounter.
