“POPEMANIA”

Someone asked: “until when will Pope Francis be a Pinoy “rock star.” My answer: “For always!” He captured our hearts and minds in his 4-day journey that almost felt like forever.

NOT RABBITS — While the Pope reiterated that church teachings of the sanctity of life, even the unborn, he also preached on responsible parenthood by asking us not to multiply like rabbits. As we know rabbits are known for giving birth fast and many. So there.

FREEDOM — I find significant the pope’s counsel about freedom of expression. One cannot just freely insult another. The receiver of the insult has also the freedom (or tendency) to react. But he cautioned us to temper our reactions even if we have the freedom and tendency to do so. He did not justify the act of terrorism by Muslims who massacred journalists who blasphemed Prophet Muhammed in their magazine. But he cautioned everyone to respect their religion and faith.

CARDINAL TAGLE — The archbishop of Manila, Cardinal Tagle was a revelation. He was close to the Pope even before his assumption in the Vatican. I listened intently to him in his interviews and statements. Young as he is, he shows depth in spirit and articulate in his words. He will eventually be Pinoy’s hope for a higher calling in the ministry.

RESURGENCE — One predictable outcome of the Pope’s visit is the new surge in the faith of many whom I call the “periphercal” Catholics or those who belong to the church but who do not practice the faith. I foresee a resurgence of renewal. One indication can be the number of Sunday church-goers that may increase. Let’s watch and see.
