Many say, “It’s motherhood!”
Some declare, “It’s simplicity bounded by principles.”
Others pronounce, “It’s the uniqueness of the contribution that she gives to the family.”

March is Women’s Month. It is an annual celebration that highlights the contribution of women to events in history and contemporary society.

It is celebrated during March in the United States, the United Kingdom, and Australia, corresponding with International Women’s Day on March 8, and during October in Canada, corresponding with the celebration of Persons Day on October 18.

The role of women, especially of mothers can be traced back in the Old Testament. When King Solomon replaced the position of his father, David, he was guided by his mother, Bathsheba. One day, Solomon’s brother approached her mother to ask a favor to the king. And because of the influence of his mother towards his reign, the king answered her: “Make your request my mother, for I will not refuse you.” Through these words, we could also recall how the first miracle took place at a wedding in Cana, all from a simple request of a woman to her son. Jesus, though not yet his time performed the miracle for Mama Mary.

We love our mothers. They deserve our respect.

The Spanish influence taught us that women “should go to church every Sunday and pray, have as little education as possible, and when grown up: get married and have kids wherein the woman’s job is to take care of the family and household while the man is the sole breadwinner.”

Though this is not anymore applicable to many urban areas in the Philippines but rural Filipinas still submit themselves to their husbands. But today, modern Filipinas lead.

They run their small “sari-sari” (variety) store or influences family decisions. They teach the value of faith in God and help educate the children to respect, honor and obey elders. They nurture and protect her children and help their husbands with their finances.

So, what is the best thing about being a woman?

It’s that small act of kindness and leadership that they show to their children, to the family, and to the world.

So, to all the women out there, especially, to the female Datu Bago awardees this year, Congratulations!
