Corpus Christi

editorial cartoon Corpus ChristiToday we celebrate the feast of Corpus Christi, which literally means “the Body of Christ.” This feast commemorates Christ’s gift of the Holy Eucharist, the most venerable sacrament “in which Christ the Lord himself is contained, offered and received, and by which the Church continually lives and grows” (CIC 897).

Celebrating the Eucharist is not only fulfilling an obligation for convenience but needs spiritual and physical preparation and confession for grave sins. “Whoever is to receive the blessed Eucharist is to abstain for at least one hour before holy communion from all food and drink, with the sole exception of water and medicine” (CIC 919).

As the center of the life of the Church, “Christ’s faithful are to hold the blessed Eucharist in the highest honor. They should take an active part in the celebration of the most august Sacrifice of the Mass; they should reverence it with the greatest adoration” (CIC 898).

We pray for those who, due to lack of priests in faraway barangays, are deprived of the opportunity to receive the Eucharist every Sunday. We pray for our lay ministers who selflessly help our clergy distribute the Eucharist to our sick brethren.

May the Body of Christ heal us!
