Subcultures

Subcultures are ways of social living that characterize behaviour of people. They are arresting moments that are difficult to avoid because they entertain and reflect the inner desires of people. They possess educational and ethical value and power. In a word, they are attitudes and ways of behaving within a larger culture.

I am referring here to basketball, boxing, beauty contest, and telenovela. From these subcultural groups are emerging popular figures and celebrities. These are areas of Filipino social life that needs the evangelizing influence of the Church. The main reason is because subcultures create community. How to evangelize them needs missionary creativity and courage enlightened by the Holy Spirit.
