National Seafarers’ Day

Today, we remember our Filipino seafarers. This celebration is spearheaded by the Apostleship of the Sea.

Due to their employment at sea, there are many reasons why it is worthwhile to offer a day of prayer for our beloved seafarers. First, they do not enjoy the grace and comfort of celebrating the Sacrifice of the Mass. In the midst of great waters, their souls may be dry and thirsty of spiritual nourishment in the Holy Eucharist.

Second, their physical distance from their loved ones is not an easy struggle to face. The longing to be with their loved one is a constant challenge for them who spend their lives in the sea in order to support their family.

And third, meeting people with different cultures in various places is not an easy thing to do. Their need to adjust not only to the changing weathers but to strange attitudes of their mates, employees and clients entails so much flexibility without losing their Christian principles.

“May they remain steadfast in their faith and become witnesses of the values of Christian living in all circumstances” (Cf. Ordo).
