Parish Conducts PSAM Day Earthquake Drill

Earthquake Drill Laverna“The faster the better.”

The very first earthquake drill in the Archdiocese of Davao happened so fast, that it lasted for just five minutes right after the 8 am mass at St. Francis of Assisi Quasi-Parish, Laverna Subdivision, last September 13. The Parish Social Action Ministry Coordinator (PSAM), Ignacio Bernaldez intended that the activity would help the people know what to do when earthquake strikes. A parishioner appreciated much the initiative saying, “I am very happy because at least we were given awareness if ever this kind of calamity will happen in the future.”

Though in doubt, parish priest, Rev. Fr. Orlando Angelia felt excited as it was the first time to be conducted in a parish. Even so, it went well because the parishioners participated. Speaker Renante Luna, the founder of Mindanao Emergency Response Team (MERT) said that the success would depend on support and cooperation of each one. “Dili nato makab-ot, ang atong tumong ug tinguha, agi’g pag pangandam batok kalamidad kung walay pag tinambayayungay,” ends Luna.

Another highlight of the PSAM day was the talk given by former Brgy. Kagawad Boy Atog on “Containerized Gardening: A Way of Urban Farming.” He taught the participants on caring for the soil and plants. Mr. Bernaldez added that he wanted his co-parishioners to live a healthy life by growing their own food and raising extra income. “At least, I did all my part in helping them, it all depends upon them if they apply all the (sets of) learning or not.” Young participants also joined and enjoyed the activities.
