Gideon and his three hundred men Gideon and his three hundred men

Men of the Scripture: Gideon

Gideon and his three hundred men

Gideon and his three hundred men

His name means “Hewer, Slasher, Hacker.” It was interesting that God called him ‘a mighty warrior’ but, Gideon did not comprehend it because his own idea was contrary to God’s.

His Work: He was a farmer. God called him to bring back Israel to the Lord and to deliver God’s people from oppressors.

His Character: He was a fearful man. He lived in a time when Israel had plenty to fear. He asked the Lord and demanded signs that reassure him of God’s faithfulness.

His Triumph: Though he was a reluctant warrior, he won a brilliant military victory and became one of the greatest judges of Israel. God’s vision for his life turned out to be far greater than his own.

His Story: Gideon’s clan was the weakest in Manasseh. He was the least in his family. But he listened carefully to what God instructed him, that is to destroy the altar that Joash, his father built for Baal. Gideon was not yet prepared to rush into battle, instead he asked the Lord a sign. And so it happened. At the end of the battle, Gideon and his small band of warriors destroyed an enemy that oppressed and made Israelites poor for seven years.

Key Text: Judges 6:36-40; 7:1-22

Reflection:

Baal, means “lord”, who was the chief Canaanite deity, the god of fertility. Some scholars believed that the more they become vulnerable to Baal worship, their agricultural life progressive.

Prayer:

Father Almighty, we want to do your will because in so doing, we are sustained. When we are afraid, please assure us of your Divine Presence. (Edgardo R. Sara | Kiblawan)
