April 1, 1989 saw the birthing of a new community which started with 29 Lay Women whose founder is Bp. Antonio Lloren Mabutas, JCD., DD., the Archbishop of the Archdiocese of Davao.

Their awareness and experience with the poor have challenged them to work among the poor who are oppressed, marginalized and exploited. The desire to respond more openly and creatively to the varying conditions and needs of the people of God eventually led to the founding of their new community with specifically a missionary character and under the patronage of Our Lady of the Assumption, thus, their name, the Missionaries of the Assumption (m.a.).

Since their foundation in 1989, they have been undergoing transitions in the different aspects of their life. Thus, in 1991, they have opted to be a Society of Apostolic Life in the Church. This being so they commit themselves to live in community and to witness to the Incarnate Christ’s option for the poor in today’s world. As an apostolic community, they are open to discern and participate in apostolic activities that bring them into solidarity with the poor in their struggle for justice, full life and total human liberation and to participate in missionary works that bring about the restoration of harmony and balance in the life systems of Mother Earth.

Presently, their mission and Vision are concretized in the following apostolate/ministries/involvements both local and foreign missions such as: Indigenous Peoples, Moro, Health, Women/Children, Justice & Peace, Parish Works, Schools, Conducting Retreats and Growth Sessions.

As a community, they recognize the mysterious movements of the Spirit that have sown the seeds of their beginnings and continue to nourish the roots of their existence. Yes, their reason for being what they are today and their vision for tomorrow are part of their yesterday’s dream. (Courtesy: Sr. Elvie Soleminio, m.a.)
