Faith in Action: PDART’s Role in Safeguarding Lives & Communities

When disaster strikes, every second counts. Whether it’s a fire, flood, earthquake, or medical emergency, swift and coordinated action can mean the difference between life and death. The Parish Disaster Action Response Teams (PDART) and Quick Response Teams (QRT) in coordination with the Parish Social Action Ministry (PSAM) of the Archdiocese of Davao stand as protectors trained and ready to shield the community from harm.

One may recognize these people at designated first aid areas in some parishes especially during Sunday Masses. They are also visible during big events in the church such as Holy Week activities, parochial fiesta, and generally any event that gathers a huge number of parishioners whether it is in the GKK, parish or Archdiocesan level.

Saving and protecting lives are the core of their mission. These teams act as first responders, providing immediate assistance during emergencies. Whether its rescuing families stranded in a flood, administering first aid to injured individuals, or evacuating residents from high-risk areas, their presence ensures that help arrives when it is needed most.

One of the active PDART or QRTs of the Archdiocese hail from St. Mary of the Perpetual Rosary Parish, Buhangin wherein it is also known as the St. Mary Action Response Team (SMART). The SMART actively helps the parish and the community during rescue operation and monitoring especially since the areas of Jade Valley and Brgy. Tigatto often experience flooding. In line with the Fire Prevention Month and in collaboration with the Bureau of Fire Protection XI Buhangin Station, they also recently held their first ever Fire Olympics at the parish ground last March 20 to gear up the volunteers and to showcase their courage, teamwork, and skills.

Their work is deeply rooted in faith and service, reflecting the Catholic mission of compassion and care for others. By protecting lives and helping those in need, they embody Christ’s call to love and serve one another, making their work not just a duty, but a spiritual mission. Their courage and dedication remind the community that faith is not just about prayer it is about taking action to safeguard and uplift others, especially in times of crisis.

The parishes continues to welcome volunteers to be part of the PDART and QRT. Training sessions, community outreach, and preparedness programs are open to those who wish to contribute. Whether through direct involvement, donations, or raising awareness, everyone has a role in safeguarding the community. Because when disaster strikes, it is not fear that saves lives it is preparation, action, and the unwavering commitment to protect one another. (Allyza Hope J. Tabigue)
