A Mother to Many: Honoring the role of motherhood in both family and ministry

Every second Sunday of May, we honor the women whose love shapes homes and hearts. We thank the mothers who give without counting, who nurture without ceasing. But some mothers go beyond their own households, becoming pillars of compassion and strength within the larger community. One such soul is Mrs. Dionisia Devera, fondly known to many as “Mommy Jo”, a mother not only to her children, but also to a growing family of catechists at St. Mary of the Perpetual Rosary Parish in Buhangin.

Mommy Jo carries a mission that goes beyond organization and instruction as the Pangulo sa Panudlo Coordinator. She embodies spiritual motherhood as she continues in mentoring catechists, guiding them in faith, and nurturing their growth as evangelizers. Her voice is gentle but firm, her hands constantly at work for the Church, and her heart wide open to those seeking direction and care.

As a youth catechist in our parish, I see her as someone who journeys together with her members in the ministry. She always makes sure that each and every one of us is doing well and I personally adore her patience and wisdom.

Her calling to serve is deeply rooted in her devotion to the Lord and inspired by Mama Mary the ultimate model of maternal love and selfless obedience. Like Mary, Mommy Jo quietly but powerfully fulfills her role never seeking attention, always pointing toward God. Her life is a witness to the words of Mary at the Annunciation: “Be it done to me according to your word.” She has said “yes” to her mission, again and again.

But perhaps what makes Mommy Jo most special is how seamlessly she blends her roles as a biological mother and a spiritual one. Her family, grounded in love and faith, is a reflection of her values. And yet, her circle of influence extends far beyond her home. From children preparing for First Communion to adult catechists navigating their own faith journeys, Mommy Jo has been a constant, comforting presence.

This Mother’s Day, we honor mothers of all kinds not just those who bear children, but also those who carry others in their hearts, who guide, uplift, and intercede like Mama Mary did. Mommy Jo is a beautiful reminder that motherhood is not just about blood; it is about presence, sacrifice, and love. It is about saying “yes” to God’s call, no matter where it leads.

As the Catechetical Ministry continues to grow in strength and number, it is clear that Mommy Jo’s legacy is being built not just in programs or events, but in lives touched and hearts inspired. In the parish, she is not only a coordinator, she is a beacon of hope and warmth, a mentor, a mother.

Thank you, Mommy Jo, for showing us what it means to mother with faith and to serve with love. You are a gift to your family, to the catechists, and to our parish community. Happy Mother’s Day! (Allyza Hope Tabigue, Youth Catechist of SMPRP)
