A Single “YES” that Gives Hope

I remember the song, ‘Words’ by the artist Boyzone. It is about the power of words that build up relationship and tear down division. The lyrics explore the idea that while word might seem insignificant but can win the heart of a lover. The power of words is undeniable. They are a potent force that can be used to create, inspire, heal and connect, but also destroy and wound a person.

A single ‘yes’, a word whispered on the breath of an angel, resonated through time, shaping the destiny of a woman in Nazareth …this is a story of hope in humanity.

Mary’s ‘yes’ to God’s plan irrevocably altered her destiny, transforming her from an ordinary young girl into pivotal figure of the history. It is a hope for eternity, the paschal mystery that offers hope for salvation. This spiritual transformation embraced the Divine purpose. In Luke 1:38 records Mary’s response “I am the Lord’s Servant. May everything you have said about me come true.” This spiritual shift redefined Mary’s identity and sustained her in following God even at the foot of the cross.

In the same way, responding to God’s call oftentimes stepping out of one’s comfort zone that pushes one to confront fears, uncertainties, and embrace challenges. Saying “yes” foster self-discovery which reveals strengths and resiliency. It involves a breakthrough, trusting in God’s guidance and surrendering to His will.

That is to say, with Mary as mother and inspiration, a ‘yes’ is a great sign of faith, hope and love to God. It was the word incarnate and dwelt among us. The birth of Jesus became the central figure of God’s mercy and forgiveness.

Likewise, Mary’s ‘yes’ is also God’s assurance of accompaniment to the transformative power of hope in Matthew 28:20, “I will be with you until the end of time”. (S. Leah Zozobrado, RVM)
