From a DIY Oven to International Career: An HCDC BS Hospitality Management Alumnus’ faith to Future

Not all success stories begin with a clear path, some start with faith, grit, and a leap of courage.

For Jovel Bante Jr., becoming part of Holy Cross of Davao College’s “Magic 7” – the pioneer batch of HCDC graduates to work in Germany – wasn’t just a fulfilled dream, it was the result of relentless effort, prayers, and a school that believed in his potential.

A graduate of the Bachelor of Science in Hospitality Management (BSHM) at HCDC, Jovel is one of the seven pioneering alumni chosen to work in Germany through the college’s international linkage program under the Center for Linkages, Internationalization, and Language Studies (CLILS). Dubbed the “Magic 7,” they represent the first batch of HCDC hospitality graduates to obtain work visas and embrace global opportunities.

Jovel’s journey was far from easy. Coming from a humble background, he often questioned whether his dreams were even possible, especially when the odds seemed stacked against him.

“There were nights I thought of giving up, thinking I wasn’t enough. But I held on to my faith and kept reminding myself why I started,” he shared.

Recalling his experience as a student in HCDC, he became viral for his do-it-yourself (DIY) oven in 2022–made from a tin biscuit container with sand as temperature regulator mechanism heated with charcoal. That experience, he shared, was among his motivations to persevere, and a source of inspiration that there is always room for resourcefulness and innovation to learn and practice what you aspire to be.

Determined to succeed, Jovel became a scholar, which allowed him to continue his education despite financial hardships. Even then, he took on multiple jobs, some of which he kept hidden from his parents, just to make ends meet and stay in school.

“I sacrificed my work so I could finish my studies,” he said.

At first, his dream was simple: to graduate. Later, he aspired to work on a ship. But life had a bigger plan in store.

Thanks to the guidance and training from HCDC through its linkages and internationalization, Jovel received not only German language instruction and cultural preparation, but also the motivation and resources to push through the challenges he faced. The program wasn’t just about sending students abroad, it was about preparing them to thrive.

Jovel balanced side jobs while studying and undergoing language training. He practiced discipline, leaned on his mentors, and most importantly, never stopped believing in his potential. “This is not just my win. This is for my family, my mentors, and everyone who told me I could,” he said.

A significant part of his success came from the strong support system surrounding him — from his family, to HCDC, to his faith. He expressed deep gratitude to the college, which played a vital role in shaping his journey. Most of all, he thanked his family, especially his mother, father, and older sister, for being his source of strength. “Kung wala sila, wala pud koy padulngan,” he said.

Jovel also credits his unwavering faith as his compass. “Isa ko sa dako og salig kay Lord,” he shared. “I believe He provides when you work hard.”

Now preparing for a new life in Germany, Jovel carries the values instilled by his alma mater: resilience, service, and compassion.

As he steps into this new chapter, Jovel’s story stands as a powerful reminder to every student who dares to rise above their limitations. His journey shows us that real success isn’t handed — it’s earned, believed in, and carried with pride. He is a living testament that with faith through education, humility and determination–you can aspire who you want to be. (Smilyn Angel Carmelotes)
