In Thy Name: Fr. Gallardo’s Sacrifice on Screen
A powerful reminder of faith, courage, and sacrifice unfolded on screen during the special screening of the film “In Thy Name” at the Sedes Sapientiae Hall, Holy Cross of Davao College. The event was participated by some of the clergy, members of different pastoral agencies, religious communities, educators and students who witnessed the moving true-to-life story of Fr. Rhoel Gallardo, CMF—a Claretian missionary priest who gave his life for his faith and his people.
Set during a period of unrest in Basilan, the film chronicles Fr. Gallardo’s unwavering commitment to serve amid danger, even at the cost of his own life. Abducted along with schoolchildren and teachers in 2000, Fr. Gallardo endured captivity with calm and compassion, offering strength to others in their darkest moments. His eventual death marked him as a modern-day hero of the local Church.
More than just a film, “In Thy Name” became a space for reflection and inspiration. Viewers were moved by the story’s emotional depth and spiritual impact, finding in Fr. Gallardo’s life a call to deeper faith and service. The screening, held within the walls of an archdiocesan academic institution, served as both a tribute and a challenge for us to remember the sacrifices of the martyrs of today and to live with purpose, even amid trials. More so, the producer and director of the film even encouraged the lay faithful to share and invite others to witness and view the said film to help share the story of a great sacrifice offered by the late Fr. Gallardo.
As the audience left the hall in thoughtful silence, one thing was clear: Fr. Rhoel Gallardo’s story continues to inspire a new generation to live not just in faith, but in love and service for God and for others.
