“Shalom” Book Officially Launched: A compilation of the published writings of the late Archbishop Capalla

A compilation of selected writings by the late Archbishop Fernando “Nanding” Robles Capalla was officially launched on March 13, 2026, at the Cross Theater of Holy Cross of Davao College, Sta. Ana Ave. Davao City.

Titled Shalom, the book gathers the reflections and articles of the former archbishop on a wide range of spiritual, social, and pastoral issues. The title comes from the Hebrew word meaning “peace,” reflecting the central message of many of Archbishop Capalla’s writings.

According to Rev. Fr. Ritsche J. Gamaya, Managing Director of Davao Verbum Dei Media Foundation, Inc., the project was a long-delayed initiative of the Davao Catholic Herald and the local Church of Davao. Meanwhile, editor Raphael Gomez said the original target date for the book’s release was Nov. 6, 2023, the commemorative date of Archbishop Capalla’s installation in Davao, which Rev. Fr. Gamaya had intended as a surprise tribute for the archbishop.

The book compiles Archbishop Capalla’s articles reflecting on issues such as contraception, divorce, summary executions, environmental concerns, existential struggles, and the broader national situation. His writings also explore the Christian life, encouraging readers to avoid sin, renounce hatred, deepen their life of prayer, forgive even their enemies, and pursue holiness.

During the launch, reviewer Dr. Ma. Iris Melliza, former HCDC President, described the title Shalom as fitting for the collection, noting that the reflections mirror the author’s lived experiences.

“The author really wrote something — with a life worth writing,” Dr. Melliza said, adding that Archbishop Capalla’s articles are contextualized for Filipino readers, particularly Cebuano-speaking audiences. She noted that the reflections are brief and focused, presenting one idea at a time for readers to contemplate.

Also speaking at the event, Miss Nurasia M. Adilao remembered Archbishop Capalla as a religious leader who consistently advocated peace, respect, and dialogue among people of different faiths.

“As we launch this book about his writings, we remember not only his words but the life that gave meaning to those words,” Adilao said.

For Rev. Msgr. Paul Cuison, Rector of San Pedro Cathedral the themes discussed in the book reflect the guiding principles of Archbishop Capalla’s life and ministry.

“At the center of everything was always the Word of God,” Rev. Msgr. Cuison said, noting the archbishop’s ability to articulate the Gospel across various pastoral and social contexts.

He added that the concept of shalom signifies wholeness, harmony, and fullness of life, guiding readers toward peace within themselves, peace with others through justice and reconciliation, and peace with God through faithfulness to the covenant.

In his message, Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., Archbishop of Davao, said the book’s launch highlights the enduring legacy of Archbishop Capalla’s ministry.

“The title Shalom is very meaningful. It speaks of the peace that comes from God and God alone — a peace that brings harmony, reconciliation, and hope,” Archbishop Valles said.

He added that the reflections gathered in the book allow readers to hear Archbishop Capalla’s voice once again, encouraging them to remain faithful to the Gospel, work for justice and peace, and care for one another as brothers and sisters in the Lord.

The book launch gathered members of the clergy, educators, and lay faithful to celebrate the writings and legacy of the former archbishop. (Alexis Joy A. Abacahin | HCDC BA-COMM SC Intern)
