September 24-30 is Laity Week. We honor the majority of the baptized who are called to be holy like the clergy and consecrated persons. In his Apostolic Letter Gaudete et Exsultate, Pope Francis writes, “To be holy does not require being a bishop, priest or a religious. We are frequently tempted to think that holiness is only for those who can withdraw from ordinary affairs to spend much time in prayer. That is not the case. We are all called to be holy by living our lives with love and by bearing witness in everything we do, wherever we find ourselves.”

The laity are not second class citizens. A lot of lay groups today follow the inspiration of our dear saint like St. Frances de Sales, St. Jose Maria Escriva and Edith Stein. May their example in sanctifying the daily work and ordinary responsibilities be our strength.
