AdDU Research Forum Highlights Water Resource Management and Corporate Social Responsibility

The Ateneo de Davao University, through its Center for Business Research and Extension (CBRE) and Social Research Training and Development Office, hosted a Research Dissemination Forum on December 6, 2024, at the Pakighinabi Room, CCFC Building. This forum presented groundbreaking findings from two key qualitative studies focusing on water security, corporate social responsibility (CSR), and sustainable community development in Davao City.

The event showcased the following studies:

  1. Qualitative Study on Apo Agua’s Corporate Social Responsibility (2024)
This research explored the CSR initiatives of Apo Agua Infrastructure Inc., emphasizing its flagship program, Project Blue. Designed to address water-related challenges faced by underserved communities in Davao City, the study highlighted the company’s innovative efforts in pipeline systems, technical support, and collaborative projects with local government agencies and organizations. Notably, it underscored the importance of integrating beneficiary feedback to enhance the relevance and inclusivity of CSR efforts, ensuring long-term benefits such as educational aid, healthcare support, and employment opportunities.
  2. Lived Experiences of Water Consumers in District 2 of Davao City Before and After the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project
This study provided a comprehensive analysis of the changes experienced by local residents and businesses following the implementation of the Davao City Bulk Water Supply Project. It reported significant improvements in water quality, availability, and operational efficiency post-implementation. Businesses, including hospitals and hotels, experienced enhanced water access, leading to reduced costs and improved service delivery. The research emphasized the transformative impact of equitable and sustainable water infrastructure in fostering resilient communities and promoting public health.

During the forum, critical issues were raised regarding the city’s growing water needs, the creeping water shortage in Mindanao, and the overdependence on groundwater. Ateneo researchers emphasized the need to preserve underground water resources for future generations and advocated for the use of surface water that would otherwise go unused.

Key Messages from Stakeholders

  • Mr. Art Milan, Director of Apo Agua, urged all stakeholders to prioritize watershed preservation, saying, “Apo Agua and DCWD, we are committed not just as water supplier but partner of sustainable development, kaya ang priority namin is the preservation ng watershed natin… So, we really need to protect and ensure that the health of our watershed is maintained for the future generation, hindi lang ngayon but for the future generations. So, ang panawagan ng Apo Agua, together with DCWD, let’s work together to protect our watershed, advance sustainability and create a legacy of progress in environmental stewardship, together we can secure a brighter future and a resilient one for Davao City and for the Davaoeños.”
  • Hon. Tek Ocampo, Chairperson of the Environment Committee, highlighted the urgency of legal frameworks to protect watersheds. He noted, “We really need that law, because there are areas in our Panigan-Tamugan watershed, napasok na ng illegal settlers.”

It is important to note that as consumers, we share the responsibility to conserve water and protect our watersheds. Beyond relying on initiatives from organizations and government agencies, individuals must play an active role in using water responsibly, supporting sustainable practices, and participating in efforts to safeguard water resources for future generations.

The forum concluded with a strong call for collaboration among individuals, institutions, and policymakers to secure the sustainability of Davao City’s water resources. By addressing water resource management and nurturing partnerships through initiatives like Project Blue and the Bulk Water Supply Project, stakeholders are taking meaningful steps toward creating a sustainable and resilient future for Davao City and its residents.
