Tingog sa Layko, Philippine Catholic Lay Mission (PCLM) December 2024

Empowering Faith: A Journey with the Philippine Catholic Lay Missionaries

On Saturday, December 7, 2024, during the program Tingog sa Layko, hosted by Ms. Christine Mae Camus, three missionaries from the Philippine Catholic Lay Mission (PCLM) shared their inspiring stories and reflections. The episode featured Mr. Marvin John Dipay from Kapalong, Ms. Daphne Belano from Moises Padilla, Negros Occidental, and Ms. Mellane Porras from Sto. Niño Parish, Panabo. These dedicated individuals are preparing for their commissioning as Lay Missionaries, scheduled to take place on December 15, 2024, at St. Agustin Parish, Panabo City. The commissioning will be presided over by Most Rev. Medil Aseo, D.D., Bishop of the Diocese of Tagum.

The discussion provided valuable insights into the PCLM, a non-profit organization committed to training and sending lay missionaries to strengthen and foster Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs) in response to the needs of parishes and dioceses. Ms. Porras emphasized the mission of the organization, explaining that the formation program for aspirants lasts approximately six months. Mr. Dipay elaborated further, sharing that the PCLM Formation House is located in Shrine Hills, Matina, Davao City.

When asked about the focus of their formation, Mr. Dipay highlighted the importance of self-awareness as a foundational step for understanding and connecting with others. He emphasized that building one’s inner self is a critical component of their preparation. Distinguished speakers enrich the formation period, helping aspirants deepen their grasp of their missionary purpose. Among the speakers, Rev. Fr. Ritsche Gamaya, Director of the Archdiocesan Commission on Social Communications, imparted his expertise on Ecclesiology and Christology, guiding the aspirants on their spiritual journey.

While the path of formation and mission work is challenging, Ms. Belano shared that God’s grace provides the strength needed to persevere. She expressed hope and encouragement for others to join the PCLM, stating that anyone who is baptized, aged 23 and above, can apply. This includes single individuals, married couples, widows, and widowers who are willing and capable of dedicating their lives to missionary work. Applicants must first pass a psychological examination before embarking on the six-month program.

The program also highlighted key leaders in the PCLM. Ms. Merlina Franco from Koronadal serves as the Directress and Head of the organization, while Rev. Msgr. Ed Labagala acts as their Spiritual Director.

This episode of Tingog sa Layko shed light on the PCLM’s significant role in enriching the spiritual and communal life of parishes across the Philippines. As these missionaries prepare to embark on their journey, their steadfast faith and dedication serve as an inspiration to all who are called to live out their baptismal mission. (Sem. Aljon Mayol)
