Cathedral Dedication Anniversary Celebrated with Papal Awards Conferral

December 14, 2024, marked a significant milestone for the San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral in the Diocese of Mati, Davao Oriental, as it celebrated the anniversary of its dedication. The momentous occasion was made even more special with the conferral of the PRO ECCLESIA ET PONTIFICE Awards.

The day’s festivities began with a Holy Eucharist celebrated at the San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral, presided over by Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, D.D. The solemn ceremony set the tone for the rest of the day’s events.

Following the mass, the awardees and guests proceeded to the St. Therese of the Child Jesus Gym, Clergy House Compound, where the awarding ceremony took place. The program began with an opening prayer led by Rev. Fr. Ruben D. Bentayao Jr.

A performance of the students from the Immaculate Heart of Mary Academy (IHMA) of an interpretative dance titled “The Mission,” showcased a variety of talent and added a creative touch to the ceremony. Msgr. Medardo A. Salomia delivered a warm welcome message, while Most Rev. Charles John Brown, D.D. – Papal Nuncio, shared a special video message.

The highlight of the ceremony was the conferral of the PRO ECCLESIA ET PONTIFICE Papal Awards. This prestigious honor is bestowed upon individuals who have demonstrated exceptional service to the Church and the Pontiff.

After the awarding ceremony, Mrs. Norma Lanaban, representing the awardees, shared a heartfelt message of gratitude. Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, D.D., Bishop of Mati, also addressed the gathering, emphasizing the significance of the occasion.

The Mati clergy paid tribute to the awardees with a special song, while Rev. Fr. Nestor Morata led the gathering in a prayer before meals. The celebration concluded with an Agape lunch and entertainment.

The San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral continues to serve as a beacon of faith and hope in the Diocese of Mati. The Pro Ecclesia et Pontifice Papal Awards highlight the awardees’ tireless dedication to the Church and the community, along with their commitment to promoting love, compassion, and service.
