Diocese of Mati marks the opening of the Jubilee Year during the Feast of the Holy Family

To signal the opening of the Year of Hope 2025, the diocesan priests, religious men and women, together with the lay people of the Diocese of Mati, convened at San Nicolas de Tolentino Cathedral on December 29, through a Eucharistic Mass presided by Most Rev. Abel C. Apigo, D.D.

On the same day, the Church also celebrated the Feast of the Holy Family of Jesus, Mary, and Joseph. Chosen by Pope Francis, the theme for the Jubilee Year is “Pilgrims of Hope”.

Unlike ordinary masses, the Eucharistic Mass earlier observed ritual indications provided for the occasion (Spes Non Confundit #6), using the liturgical guide sent by the Pope.

Before the mass, the lay faithful gathered in a solemn procession towards the cathedral, where the Jubilee Cross was carried in a powerful symbol of unity and faith. The faithful walked alongside the clergy, embodying unity and devotion as they journeyed together.

The second part of the opening rite includes the sprinkling of the Holy Water, which reveals the renewal of faith and participation in the blessings of this sacred occasion.

In his homily, Bishop Apigo said, “As we continue with the celebration of the Holy Eucharist, our only hope—Jesus Christ, born in the manger, defended by their innocence, proclaimed by St. John the Evangelist, kini nga Dios ang atoang paglaum. Busa simbahon ug daygon ta ang Dios sa pagtoo ug paglaum.”

The Diocese of Mati was one with the whole Church in officially opening the Jubilee Year 2025. As we voyaged as Pilgrims of Hope, may God, who bestowed upon us boundless grace, have continued to sustain us so that we meaningfully celebrated this year of joy, renewal, and mission.
