Ateneo De Davao University Celebrates Ramadhan together with the Muslim community in Davao City

The Muslim community in Ateneo de Davao University gathered for the Community Duyog Ramadhan Grand Iftar on the 26th day of fasting, an event organized by the Al Qalam Institute. Held at the Arrupe Hall on March 27, 2025, at 4:30 PM, the gathering marked a significant observance of the holy month of Ramadhan, emphasizing fasting, spiritual growth, and unity within the Muslim Ummah.

The event also honored Laylat al-Qadr, the Night of Power and Decree, which is believed to be the night when the Quran was revealed to Prophet Muhammad.

Sheikh Abdulrahman Caderao, Executive Program Director of the Madrasah Comprehensive Development and Promotion Unit, underscored the importance of making fasting meaningful, as taught by Prophet Muhammad.

“Fasting should not be wasted. It is a means to draw closer to Allah, who desires peace among His people,” Caderao stated. He further emphasized that Ramadan serves as a time for self-reflection and transformation.

“We must learn from our mistakes, rise above them, and strive to be better individuals. That is the essence of Ramadan and fasting—to become the best versions of ourselves.”

The event also highlighted the importance of interfaith dialogue and inclusivity. Ateneo de Davao University President, Fr. Karel San Juan, S.J., emphasized that fostering connections with different local and international communities is essential for deeper spiritual growth and understanding.

“Inclusivity is at the heart of our Catholic Christian faith. Engaging in dialogue with other religions cultivates compassion, friendship, respect, and humility—virtues essential to Christian life and morality,” Fr. San Juan remarked.

He also noted the shared values between Christianity and Islam, particularly in the disciplines of Ramadan and Lent, both of which emphasize purification, self-reflection, and a closer relationship with God.

“Ramadan resonates with the Christian Lenten season. Both aim to purify the self, achieving greater interior freedom to know God and follow His will more closely. This, in turn, leads to greater peace in the world,” he explained.

Fr. San Juan also expressed pride in the Muslim students of Ateneo de Davao University, acknowledging their contributions and the importance of continuing to foster interfaith engagement.

“We will continue to create opportunities for meaningful dialogue and collaboration among people of different faiths, religions, and cultural backgrounds,” he affirmed.
