Priests Answering the Call: Embracing Synodality and Stewardship
May 5 and 6 were special days for the Archdiocese of Davao, as diocesan and religious priests gathered in a spirit of synodality for a focused session on Parish Pastoral and Financial Administration. The gathering was timely, as it followed the recent changes in priest (diocesan) assignments within the archdiocese.
The meeting provided a meaningful opportunity for both incoming and outgoing parish priests, as well as newly appointed parish vicars, to prepare for their new responsibilities. It also served as a moment to revisit current practices in parish pastoral and financial administration, especially in light of promoting the spirit of synodality and the spirituality of stewardship. A special call was made to newly assigned parish priests to acquire a basic understanding of the core principles of parish administration.
The gathering began with a Presbyterium meeting in the morning, followed in the afternoon by sharing sessions on different parish practices, particularly on pastoral and financial administration.
On the second day, the discussions deepened with a talk by Msgr. Julius Rodulfa on Synodality and Stewardship. He encouraged reflection on the Church’s identity as a community of stewards journeying together as a synodal Church. He emphasized that this calling is lived out through collective action and responsible management of the mission entrusted by God.
This was followed by a session led by Msgr. Paul Cuison, who spoke about the principles of Parish Pastoral and Financial Administration. According to him, the gathering served as a valuable review of the foundations of parish administration, particularly in its two key aspects: pastoral care and financial stewardship. He emphasized the importance of collaboration and a shared vision.
Archbishop Romulo G. Valles expressed his deep joy and gratitude for the event, especially in light of the upcoming changes in priestly assignments. He thanked both diocesan and religious clergy in Davao for their continued commitment to the needs of the Church and their faithful obedience to their vocation and ministry.
This gathering marks not an end, but a beginning—a continued journey of faith, service, and shared mission. For the priests of the Archdiocese of Davao, there is still much work to be done and many opportunities ahead to continue learning, growing, and journeying together in mission. As we move forward in this Year of Hope, may the spirit of synodality and stewardship continue to guide our shared path in faithfully serving the Church and our communities with renewed commitment and purpose.
