Church Celebrates 100th Kristong Haring Lingkod
The Philippine Catholic Church will be celebrating the 100th anniversary of the declaration of the Solemnity of Christ the King on November 23, 2025 with the theme KRISTONG HARING LINGKOD with a procession and Eucharistic Celebration at EDSA Shrine with presider, Catholic Bishops Conference of the Philippines President Pablo Virgilio Cardinal David.
The centenary of the Feast of Christ the King, established by Pope Pius XI in 1925, is celebrated in 2025, marking a significant moment in the Catholic liturgical calendar.
Historical Context
The Feast of Christ the King was instituted by Pope Pius XI in 1925 through the encyclical Quas Primas. This decision came in the aftermath of World War I, a time marked by political upheaval, the rise of secular ideologies, and a general disillusionment with modern civilization. The Pope aimed to remind the faithful of Christ’s universal authority over all nations and cultures, emphasizing that His reign extends beyond the spiritual realm into the temporal world.
Significance of the Feast
The feast serves as a reflection on the kingship of Christ, inviting believers to recognize His sovereignty in their lives and the world. It is celebrated on the last Sunday of Ordinary Time, just before Advent, symbolizing the culmination of the liturgical year and the anticipation of Christ’s coming. The observance of this feast is a response to the challenges posed by secularism and the need for a reaffirmation of faith in Christ’s authority.
Centenary Celebrations
In 2025, various celebrations are planned to mark the 100th anniversary of the Feast of Christ the King. Notably, a Worldwide Eucharistic Procession is set to take place in Derry, Northern Ireland, on November 23, 2025. This event aims to gather clergy and laity in a demonstration of faith and unity, with expectations of significant participation. The procession is part of a broader call for communities worldwide to engage in similar celebrations, fostering a spirit of devotion and reflection on Christ’s kingship.
In the Philippines, the celebration marks the culmination of the National Day of Prayer and Public Repentance launched last October 7, culminating on November 23, the Centennial of the Solemnity of Christ the King.
