PAG-ASA Davao: Heavy Rains Due to La Niña Expected to Last Until February 2026
PAG-ASA Davao has urged the public to remain vigilant in the coming days as the ongoing La Niña condition continues to bring heavy rains to Mindanao, particularly in the Davao Region.
During the weekly Kapehan sa Dabaw press conference held at SM City Davao on November 17, 2025, Lolita Vinalay, Chief Meteorological Officer of PAG-ASA Davao, revealed that the region is currently affected by the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ), which has caused significant rainfall in recent days. Rainfall is also expected to continue, especially in the afternoons and evenings.
PAG-ASA explained that the country is now under a La Niña episode, with a 77% probability of persisting until February 2026. During La Niña, above-normal rainfall is expected, particularly in areas facing the Pacific Ocean, including Davao de Oro and other parts of the Davao Region.
“Expected na during La Niña, may mga pag-ulan na sobra sa normal. So paghandaan gyud nato, especially sa mga areas facing the Pacific.” the agency stated.
Based on the climate outlook, the Northeast Monsoon or Amihan may further intensify in the coming weeks, increasing the likelihood of rains in upland and coastal areas.
PAG-ASA also warned fishermen and small vessels to be cautious of strong waves and rip currents in coastal waters.
For now, PAG-ASA continues close monitoring while urging the public to prepare disaster kits, follow weather advisories, and avoid crossing rivers, especially when sudden water level rise is possible due to heavy rainfall. (Kelvin Aguilon)
