A Journey of Faith and Sacrifice: How the Laity of the Archdiocese of Davao Prepare for Lent and Holy Week

As the season of Lent unfolds, the faithful of the Archdiocese of Davao enter a period of solemn reflection, sacrifice, and renewed commitment to prayer. In parishes across Davao City and its neighboring communities, the laity quietly begin their spiritual preparations weeks before Holy Week arrives. Ash Wednesday marks not only the imposition of ashes but the beginning of a deeply personal journey, a journey that calls every Catholic to repentance, fasting, and acts of charity.

For many lay faithful, preparation starts with intentional spiritual discipline. Daily Mass attendance increases. The Stations of the Cross every Friday become a common sight, with parishioners meditating on Christ’s suffering while carrying their own silent burdens. Catholic organizations, Basic Ecclesial Communities (BECs), and lay ministries also organize recollections and Lenten reflections to deepen understanding of Christ’s passion.

Fasting and abstinence take on both personal and communal expressions. Beyond abstaining from meat on Fridays, many Dabawenyo Catholics consciously give up comforts such as social media distractions, unnecessary expenses, and leisure activities to cultivate spiritual focus. Almsgiving becomes more visible as parishes intensify outreach programs, visit the sick, support feeding initiatives, and extend assistance to marginalized families. In this way, Lent is not only observed within church walls but lived out in homes and communities.

As Holy Week approaches, preparation becomes more tangible and communal. Families clean and adorn their homes with simple religious images, while parish volunteers rehearse for Palm Sunday liturgies, the Chrism Mass, and the solemn celebrations of the Triduum. Choirs practice hymns that echo through the parishes, and youth groups prepare for live dramatizations of the Passion. The faithful also make time for Lenten recollections, confession, recognizing it as a vital step toward spiritual renewal before commemorating Christ’s suffering, death, and resurrection.

During the Sacred Triduum, starting from the Mass of the Lord’s Supper on Holy Thursday to Easter Vigil on Holy Saturday, the participation of the laity becomes even more profound as everyone is called to partake in these important days of the Catholic faith. Lay readers, altar servers, collectors, and ministry members serve with reverence and dedication. On Good Friday, many Dabawenyos observe moments of silence, fasting, and prayer, some joining processions that wind through parish streets in solemn remembrance. By Easter Sunday, the somber tone gives way to joy, as church bells ring and communities celebrate the Resurrection with renewed hope.

In the Archdiocese of Davao, Lent and Holy Week are not merely liturgical seasons on the calendar they are lived experiences of faith. Through prayer, sacrifice, and service, the laity journey together toward Easter, embodying a spirituality that is both deeply personal and profoundly communal. In their acts of devotion and solidarity, whether through serving in the different liturgical celebrations or silently yet actively participating in the different events, the faithful continue to make Christ’s passion and resurrection present in the everyday life of the local Church.
