MIC Celebrates 60 Years as a Province

March 19, the feast of Saint Joseph, the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (MIC) marked a deeply meaningful milestone: the 60th year of their province, aptly named St. Joseph Province. The celebration was not only a commemoration of history but a profound moment of gratitude, reflection, and renewed mission.

At the heart of the celebration was a spirit of quiet strength, St. Joseph himself. In her address, Sr. Josie Leal, Provincial Superior, reflected on the many faces of St. Joseph as described in Patris Corde by Pope Francis: a beloved, tender, and loving father; an obedient father; an accepting father; a creatively courageous father; a working father; and a father in the shadows. She emphasized how little is written about him in the Gospels, and yet how powerful his silent witness remains.

Drawing on this image, Sr. Josie spoke candidly about the realities confronting the MIC today, including declining numbers, aging members, health concerns, and the weight of local and global challenges that affect their lives and mission. Yet, in the spirit of St. Joseph, these are not obstacles but invitations: to trust, to persevere, and to act with quiet courage.

She turned especially to the Associates of the Missionary Sisters of the Immaculate Conception (AsMICs) and other lay collaborators, reminding them of their vital role in this shared mission. In a time of uncertainty, they are called to be a source of strength and encouragement for one another, like co-workers, sustaining the charism and carrying it forward with hope.

The Eucharistic celebration, presided over by Rev. Fr. Adorable Castillo, CICM, expanded this reflection to the wider world. He reminded the congregation of the ongoing tensions and suffering in the Middle East, underscoring how conflicts in one part of the world ripple across nations and peoples. His message was both sobering and unifying: the call to prayer is inseparable from the call to solidarity.

In this context, the solemnity of St. Joseph became even more meaningful. A man who protected the Holy Family amid uncertainty and danger, St. Joseph stands as a timeless patron for a world in need of peace, protection, and faithful stewardship.

As the MIC community celebrated six decades of their provincial journey, the Mass became more than a remembrance; it became a prayerful entrustment. With St. Joseph as their guide, they asked for continued protection for their congregation and for the Church, trusting that even in silence and shadow, God’s work unfolds with steadfast love.

Ultimately, it was a celebration marked not by grandeur but by depth. It is a fitting tribute to the one who quietly shaped salvation history and continues to inspire a mission lived in faith, humility, and hope. (Maria Victoria Ledonio-Yao | AsMIC National President)
