One Church, One Journey: La Flotilla de San Pedro Sets Sail in a Historic Celebration of Faith

Like a fleet of boats sailing together across open waters, over a thousand Catholics from across the Archdiocese of Davao gathered not simply for a procession, but for a shared pilgrimage of faith. Aptly called La Flotilla de San Pedro, the Archdiocesan Grand Fiesta Procession transformed the streets of Davao City into a living testimony of devotion to Saint Peter the Apostle, bringing together parishes, vicariates, clergy, religious organizations, and lay faithful in what organizers describe as the first Archdiocesan Grand Procession and the first grand procession of its kind in Mindanao.

Set on June 27, 2026, the procession began at Roxas Avenue and wound through C.M. Recto Avenue, A. Bonifacio Street, Anda Street, and San Pedro Street before culminating at San Pedro Square (Agila Stage). The route symbolized more than a journey through the city’s major streets—it reflected the pilgrimage of the local Church, united in faith and moving together under the patronage of the Prince of the Apostles.

Eleven beautifully adorned floats formed the heart of the historic procession, each representing a parish or devotional community within the Archdiocese. Joining the procession were the floats of Divine Mercy Apostolate, St. Francis of Assisi Parish (Maa), St. James Parish (Bunawan), Virgen Dolorosa Parish (Babak), Immaculate Conception Parish (Mintal), Our Lady of Fatima Parish (Fatima St.), Sta. Ana Shrine Parish(Sta. Ana Ave.), Most Sacred Heart of Jesus Parish (Calinan), Sto. Rosario Parish (Toril), Our Lady of Assumption Parish (F. Torres St.), and the host San Pedro Cathedral. Accompanying the carrozas were vibrant Sayaw-Saulog performers from the different vicariates, whose music and dance highlighted the rich cultural heritage of the local Church while expressing joyful devotion to its patron.

As the procession drew closer to its conclusion, attention turned to the host parish, San Pedro Cathedral, where the image of San Pedro Apostol, the El Festejado or honored patron, took center stage. Accompanied by the Magallanes Elementary School Drum and Bugle Corps, the University of Mindanao Brass Band, the Knights of Columbus carrying Vatican flags, the Cathedral priests, the Cathedral entourage, and representatives from the Basic Ecclesial Communities (GKKs), the faithful welcomed the patron with the hymn “Mangingisda sa Katawhan,” recalling Saint Peter’s calling as a humble fisherman chosen by Christ to shepherd His Church.

The celebration drew inspiration from the event’s name itself. According to Atty. Aileen Lizada, head of the La Flotilla organizing committee, the term flotilla refers to a group of small boats traveling together as one fleet. The symbolism mirrors the Archdiocese’s history: from the distinctive boat-shaped roof of San Pedro Cathedral to the bancas used by the Jesuit and Augustinian missionaries who first brought the Catholic faith to Davao. More than a historical reference, the image of a flotilla captures the Church journeying together through time, guided by Christ and led by Saint Peter.

This same message is reflected in the official logo of La Flotilla de San Pedro, which tells the story of Davao’s Church as one founded through missionary faith, shaped by history, enriched by cultural diversity, strengthened through trials, and continually guided by Saint Peter toward Christ. Like boats sailing together despite changing tides, the faithful are reminded that they, too, are called to journey as one family of faith.

Beyond its grandeur, the procession carried a deeper significance. It forms part of the celebration of the 178th Parochial Fiesta of San Pedro Cathedral, paying tribute to the enduring legacy of the Church in Davao and the apostolic witness of Saint Peter. Organizers likewise expressed hope that La Flotilla de San Pedro will become an annual tradition, strengthening communion among the Archdiocese’s vicariates while preserving the city’s rich religious and cultural heritage for generations to come.

Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., Archbishop of Davao, who presided over the Concluding Mass of the La Flotilla de San Pedro, expressed his sincere thanks to everyone who spearheaded, joined and supported the event. Despite the sudden rain in the middle of the Eucharistic Celebration, the faith of the laity and the participants remained steadfast.

As the final procession entered San Pedro Square, the gathering became more than the conclusion of a religious parade. It stood as a visible expression of a Church moving together in communion as one people, one mission, and one faith. True to the event’s theme, the faithful sailed as one spiritual flotilla, anchored in Christ and inspired by the unwavering witness of Saint Peter the Apostle, whose faith continues to guide the Church in Davao toward the future.
