A Mother’s Embrace: Our Lady of Guadalupe’s Visit in the Archdiocese of Davao
There are moments in our lives that are difficult to explain because they are not just seen by the eyes, they are deeply felt by the heart. The arrival of the Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe in the Archdiocese of Davao is one of those moments I know I will carry with me for the rest of my life.
I still remember when our parish conducted the Information, Education, and Communication (IEC) campaign in our GKKs. As we shared the story of Our Lady of Guadalupe with the faithful, I also found myself learning and understanding it in a deeper way. What touched me the most was the trust that Our Lady placed in San Juan Diego. She chose a simple and humble man to carry her message to the people. Despite his fears and doubts, she assured him with words that continue to comfort countless hearts: “Am I not here, I who am your mother?”
As I reflected on his life, I realized why his story speaks so powerfully to young people. Like many of us in today’s generation, San Juan Diego experienced uncertainty, questioned his own abilities, and felt unworthy of the mission entrusted to him. Yet, it was Our Lady’s confidence in him and her loving assurance that gave him the courage to continue. That same reflection eventually inspired Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Youth Apostolate to choose San Juan Diego as our Patron Saint. We saw in him the struggles, fears, and hopes that many young people experience today. More importantly, we saw how the loving presence of our Blessed Mother transformed his doubts into courage and his hesitation into faithful obedience. His story continues to remind us that when we entrust ourselves to Mary, she gently leads us to discover the mission God has prepared for us.
From that moment on, I became eager to witness the Philippine Pilgrimage. I followed every stop through social media livestreams, watching as different archdioceses and dioceses welcomed her with so much love and devotion. Every celebration I watched made me look forward to the day she would finally come to Davao. It felt like waiting for someone very dear whom I had longed to meet.
Then, the day finally arrived. During the Welcome Mass, I stood among a huge number of faithful with great anticipation. As Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D., Archbishop of Davao, slowly unveiled the sacred Pilgrim Image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, something happened within me that I cannot fully describe. There was an overwhelming joy unlike anything I had ever experienced. It was not excitement. It was not simply happiness. It was the kind of peace that quietly settles in your heart.
For a brief moment, I felt like a little child who had finally found her mother after a long journey, a child who no longer had to worry because she knew she was safe. There were no words, no prayers forming in my mind. I simply looked at her, and my heart understood what my lips could not express. I realized then that this pilgrimage was never just about seeing a sacred image. It was about encountering a Mother who constantly reminds us that we are never alone.
One of the most unforgettable moments for me was the experience of receiving the laying of the tilma. As the tilma was gently placed over me, I closed my eyes. In that instant, everything around me seemed to disappear. The voices faded. The crowd became silent. All I felt was warmth. It was as if Our Lady herself was embracing me, not physically, but in a way only the heart can recognize. Every burden I had been carrying, every silent prayer I had kept to myself, every worry I had entrusted to God suddenly felt lighter. I cannot explain it logically, but I know what I experienced was real. It was a mother’s embrace. That simple gesture reminded me that Mary continues to accompany her children, gently leading us closer to her Son, Jesus Christ. She continues to reassure us, just as she reassured San Juan Diego centuries ago, that we are under her loving protection.
Looking back, I now understand why this pilgrimage moved so many hearts across the Philippines. It was never simply about traveling from one place to another. It was about Our Blessed Mother visiting her children, reminding us that she continues to walk with us through every joy, every struggle, every uncertainty, and every season of our lives.
As the Youth Coordinator, I also felt renewed in my mission to serve. Our Lady’s trust in San Juan Diego reminded me that God does not call the most capable; He calls those who are willing to say “yes.” In the same way, our young people are invited to become witnesses of hope, humility, and faith in a world that longs for God’s love.
This pilgrimage has become one of the greatest blessings of my faith journey. It reminded me that no matter how difficult life becomes, I always have a Mother who listens, who intercedes, who comforts, and who gently leads me back to Jesus.
To many, this may have been a historic pilgrimage. To me, it was something far more personal. It was the day a daughter felt the quiet embrace of her Mother. And that is a grace I will forever carry in my heart. (Kristelle D. Billones | Our Lady of Guadalupe Parish Youth Coordinator)
