A Call to Protect Migrant Children

On September 27, 2026, the Church celebrates the 40th National Migrants’ Sunday, 112th World Day of Migrants and Refugees and National Seafarers’ Sunday (observing the 31st National Seafarers’ Day), carrying the theme, “Even Just One of These Children,” drawn from Matthew 18:5: “Whoever welcomes one such child in my name welcomes me.” This celebration invites the faithful to look beyond borders and circumstances and recognize the dignity of every migrant and refugee, especially children who face vulnerability, separation, and uncertainty in their journey.

Children on the move are not merely statistics or faces in a distant crisis; they are young lives deserving of protection, love, and opportunities to grow in safety. Forced to leave their homes because of conflict, poverty, violence, and other circumstances, many experience hardships that no child should bear. The Church’s mission is to ensure that even one child is not overlooked, but welcomed as a brother or sister whose dignity reflects the presence of Christ.

This observance also calls communities to move beyond sympathy toward meaningful solidarity. Families, parishes, schools, and institutions are invited to extend support, promote safe environments, and stand against the exploitation and neglect of migrant children. Welcoming others means creating spaces where displaced families can experience compassion, belonging, and hope, regardless of their origin or circumstances.

As we commemorate National Migrants’ Sunday, may the Church renew its commitment to being a refuge of love and a voice for those who are vulnerable. To welcome even one child is to welcome Christ Himself. May our prayers lead to concrete acts of service, protection, and solidarity, reminding us that every person on the journey deserves to be seen, heard, and embraced as a child of God.
