Bridging Hearts Across Distance: St. Joseph the Worker Parish Holds Symposium on Absentee Parents

On September 27, 2026, St. Joseph the Worker Parish hosted a transformative, day-long Symposium on Absentee Parents at the West Empire Seafood Garden. Held in conjunction with the Archdiocese of Davao’s celebration of National Seafarer’s Day and Migrants’ Sunday, the gathering was both timely and deeply resonant for families navigating the challenges of separation due to overseas employment and migration.

Centering on the theme “Bridging Hearts Across Distance,” the symposium drew participants from various GKKs. Attendees included solo parents, siblings, grandparents, and relatives who carry the profound responsibility of raising children while loved ones work afar.

Throughout the day, engaging activities were guided by the dedicated Family and Life Apostolate (FLA) lead couples and facilitators—the Bacquial couple, the Arrabaca couple, Susan Andoy, Edith Rosales, Norman Gravino, and Ken Cabiladas. The sessions created an atmosphere of deep reflection and vulnerability, balanced by a firm commitment to providing a safe, confidential, and supportive environment for all participants.

A primary highlight of the event was the keynote address by Rev. Fr. Dexter Veloso, Director of the Commission on Migrants & Seafarers, who offered insightful guidance on spiritual and emotional resilience. St. Joseph Parish Priest, Rev. Fr. Roy Mejias, also graced the occasion to deliver an inspirational message, encouraging families to lean on faith and community support.

The symposium concluded as a profound journey of emotional healing, letting go, and building lasting support networks among families sharing similar paths. It stood as a meaningful testament to the spirit of Migrants’ Sunday—proving that even across great distances, faith and community can keep hearts united. (Emy Gamorot)
