MARRIAGE radically changes the lives of two people forever. It is such a life-changing event ushered in by a short exchange of “I Dos” during the marriage rite. Though brief it signals the start of a life-long commitment.

For a Catholic man and woman, a church wedding is of prime importance. But sadly, this is not so for some who opt for a civil rite instead for one reason or another. Although it is legally valid, it is not a sacramental. Hence, a Catholic couple, who live together as husband and wife under such rite, goes against the holiness of marriage. The best recourse for them is a church wedding. It is not only legal, but most importantly it is a sacrament.

During the celebration of the Sacrament, a bride and bridegroom exchange their marriage vows in the presence of Jesus. Upon reception of the Holy Communion, Jesus comes to each of them to foster His intimate relationship with them and subsequently during their family life.

In Catholic marriage, therefore, the bride and bridegroom join with Christ in a union that deepens their oneness with His Church. It is a sacrament that gives spouses a special grace to live out their marriage as a symbol of Christ’s love for His bride: the Church (CCC 341).

God is the Author of marriage which Christ raised to a sacrament. Thus, it is just but right that a Catholic couple’s marital commitment be solemnly exchanged in His Presence during their wedding celebration in the church.
