K to 12 and Catholic Schools

k-12 editorialAmong the varied reactions when K to 12 was approved for implementation are: this is an added expense for parents; to add the number of years to education does not guarantee quality results; schools lack rooms to accommodate such change; and what will happen to some of our teachers during the transition?

These reactions reflect the normal fear and worry brought about by something new. Although the fruitfulness of this path our educational system has chosen can only be proven few years from now, enough time have been given to consider the views of our lawmakers, educators and beneficiaries.

This is a ripe time for the Church and state to work together for the formation of our children. Isn’t it evident that a number of Catholic schools do offer their resources such as classrooms for students enrolled in public schools?

“Catholic educational institutions have been making a distinct contribution to the total well-being of our country. It is impossible to think of the Philippines becoming what it is today without their contribution. Catholic schools, colleges and universities are among the best educational institutions in the land. Besides their religious task, they make a distinct and important secular contribution (PCP II 622)”.
