Shame On Us!

shame on usShame on us, we call ourselves Catholics but we don’t take the time to study our faith. When our brethren from other faiths engage us in a discussion of the Scriptures or our little inquisitive children ask us even innocent questions about God or those who are confused and lost we either escape or become reticent because we hardly know anything about Him.

Shame on us, we call ourselves Christians, but we would rather excuse ourselves than grab the opportunity to understand what makes us so. Work is more important or some other activities or reading materials.

Shame on us, when we know more but we would rather not share. We are afraid that by sharing our deposits of knowledge it will be lessened or that we will fall short of expectations.

Shame on us, when we have access to all information through the tri-media such as the internet, radio and television, but only limit ourselves to those that entertain us.

Shame on us, when we have the capacity to help others and even ourselves to know, love and serve God yet we would rather not spend our time, talent and treasure on such heavenly endeavour. Or if the pockets are dry, the gargantuan price seems beyond our means that we easily chicken out from pursuing our evangelizing mission.

Moreover, as the Vatican Council II declares, “it would be shameful if by their inactivity Catholics allowed the word of God to be silenced or obstructed by the technical difficulties which these media present and by their admittedly enormous price (Inter Mirifica, 17).”
