Our Lady of the Assumption Parish Milestones

Assumption Parish1950s
January 18, 1952. Land donation was made by Doña Vicenta Monteverde vda. De Tionko for which Assumption Church would be located.

1956. The Redemptorist Fathers led by Fr. John Scanlan, CSsR came and started building a mission church.

August 15, 1959. Our lady of the Assumption Parish was launched. Fr. Jean Bernard Bazinet, P.M.E. became the first parish priest.

1960s
1963-68. Fr. Conrad Lafortune, PME served as Parish Priest

1968. The parish was turned over to Diocese of Davao with Fr. Edgar Rodriguez, DCD as parish priest.

1970s
1972. Assumption Parish was divided into two — northern became The Redemptorist and the other half remained the Assumption Parish.

July 2, 1972. The Way Seminar for the youth’s spiritual growth and leadership training was well participated. The Cursillo Movement was also active.

1975. Catechetical program, headed by Ms. Celestina Badonio, formed Pop, Teenage, and Rondalla Choirs.

February 11, 1977. The Parish Health Center was created.

1977-78. Fr. Robert Chabot became the 6th Parish Priest and 1st parish bulletin was created. The parish Evangelization Core group held the 1st seminar to all sectors of the parish.

1980s
1980. The present church building was built.

1981. Pope John Paul II visited Davao City.

1984. GKK was formally started Fr. Kit Mendoza and Sr. Estrella del Mar, OSB.

Aug 15, 1984. First mass was celebrated in the newly-built church.

December 1985. 1st batch of Servants of the Blessed Sacrament Sisters arrived in the parish.

1984. Celebration of 2000th birthday of the Blessed Virgin Mary.

April 1986. Fr. Botero was the 1st ordained priest in the newly built church.

1986. Establishment of the Assumption Youth Council.

1987. Parish Vision, Mission, and Goals were formed.

1990s
1990. Assumption Parish Socio Economic and Development Foundation Inc. [APSED] was created for the homeless and landless.

May 19, 1991. The celebration of the sacrament of Baptism was incorporated during 930 and 4:30 masses into the Sunday schedule.

1992. Fr. Villar became the 1st Blessed Sacrament priest from Mindanao and the construction of the SSS Sisters’ future convent was launched.

March 25, 1993. The cement statue of the Our Lady of the Assumption was formed along the Cursillo House fence. The church’s new stations of the cross were inaugurated.

April 12, 1993. TEATRO, a youth theater group was created.

July 1993. The mural was created by AYAG.

September 16, 1993. YEL [Youth Euycharistic League] was formed.

October 4-8, 1993. First Life in the Eucharist Seminar was held.

October 27, 1993. The Assumption Multi-Purpose Cooperative [AMPUCO] was organized.

January 1994. The Week of Prayer for Chiastian Unity was observed.

April 1, 2000
Sr. Gina Bernadas, SSS who served the parish as catechist for 6 years made her perpetual profession to religious life.

July
The parish LITES Core group hosted the 1st LITE Congress of Davao.

Oct. 2-13
The ten nightly pilgrimage to San Pedro Cathedral was well participated by the parishoners. The “Panaw—duaw and the passing through the Holy Door were indeed a rare experience because this only happens every 50 years.

November 2006
The parish hosted 350 delegates of the National Youth Day

2008
New additional schedule of activities of the parish. Children’s mass at 3pm, every 3rd Sunday Youth Mass at 3:00, every 4th Sunday Liturgical Minister’s Assembly and Holy Hour at 7:00 PM every 1st Saturday.

October 2008
Parish official logo was declared. Vision-mission was presented to the assembly.

2009-present
Programs and activities are undertaken to achieve a community aflamed by Eucharist through relevant life-giving worship, renewed integral evangelization and renewed social apostolate for total human development.
