Wanted: Young Catechists

cartoon pedro calungsodFor decades, our catechists spend their productive life proclaiming the teachings of the Church. This labor of love must be sustained amidst the headwinds of the 21st century.

Today, the Church needs young catechists to continue proclaim the teachings of the Church but the Church fears that young catechists are hard to come by. The main culprit: the irresistible lure of technology that makes our young become engrossed and excited thereby forgetting to feed their souls and the souls of the others.

Half a century ago, the great physicist Albert Einstein said, “I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have generations of idiots.” Harsh words from a genius, but true!

The Word of God feeds our souls. It is our prayer like that of the young San Pedro Calungsod who braved the seas to bring the Word of God to distant lands. The youth today do not have to travel far and wide to proclaim the teachings of the Church, they just have to use and take advantage of the rapid advance of technology as a means to deepen their faith and share it to everyone with courage. The youth can easily become catechists; can easily become the voice of faith which they received in their baptism with the use of technology of which they are so addicted with.

With their youthful energy and with our Lady’s help, they can sustain and expand the noble task of sharing the Good News.

We therefore call on the young to become young catechists and respond enthusiastically for the love of God who will never be outdone in generosity.
