Fr. William J. Malley, S.J. is the man behind the establishment of Ignatian Institute of Religious Education Foundation (IIREF). He was given his tribute recently after a Holy Mass presided by Most Rev. Romulo G. Valles, D.D. at the Archbishop’s residence, recently.

Archbishop Emeritus Fernando Capalla, D.D. in his homily re-echoed the Psalmist saying, “Let us go rejoicing into the house of the Lord”, citing the unique contribution of Fr. Malley to the people of Davao as one of the many reasons to be happy.

Fr. Malley, according to Archbishop Valles is like a “sunburst” which radiates God’s light and love in this part of the world, enlightening those who receive the gift of theological knowledge and Godly wisdom through the Institute he founded. Simple dinner was served after the Eucharistic celebration, while messages of appreciation were also pronounced.

It was in Ateneo de Davao University that Fr. Malley founded IIRE in 1992. Later in 2003, it was transferred to Holy Cross of Davao College. Its name was changed into Ignatian Institute of Religious Education Foundation (IIREF).

Flourishing as years went on, today it offers masteral and doctorate degree programs in Theology. Its unique feature is the Vicariate Schools of Theology Program, giving theological education to lay leaders in different parishes in the Archdiocese of Davao and its neighboring dioceses.

IRREF also holds classes in three prison houses in the Diocese of Tagum, Davao Prison and Penal Farm in Panabo City; in the Correctional Institution for Women in Sto. Tomas; and in Tagum City Jail.

With his dynamism IIREF will continue to serve the local Church of Davao, today and in the future. Kudos and happy trip Fr. Malley! (Niño Legaspi Cuestas)
