JPIICD campus journalists hold 1st ‘writeshop’

Aspiring campus journalists and members of JP Chronicles, a student media organization based in John Paul II College of Davao, joined the Basic Journalism Writing Workshop held at the college AVR, August 9, Friday.

The one-day ‘writeshop’ was participated in by 18 resident members of the budding organization who included the editorial staff, writers, researchers, videographers and artists. The activity was said to be essential to the student publication’s operation as it was the first seminar organized since JP Chronicles was established last year, which concentrated then on online updates and releases.

John Frances Fuentes of The Davao Catholic Herald and Mr. Ed “EdFer” Fernandez served as resource speakers. Fuentes’ topic covered tips on news gathering, interviewing and basic approaches to writing stories, reminding the aspiring campus media practitioners of their duties and responsibilities as journalists.

EdFer’s lecture included his personal stories as a journalist-educator, who is currently . Participants were inspired by the latter’s travels around Mindanao and in some other parts in the country visiting campuses and helping them build and develop student publications in the region. Further, he challenged the non-English major members of the publication to continue their passion towards journalism. “It doesn’t matter if you’re field is in IT, Engineering, Business Administration, or Nursing. For as long as you have the passion, that is enough,” he added.

The said writeshop is part of JP Chronicles’ preparation to release its first printed publication in September this year.
