CBCP: “Poverty, a social scandal”

The Catholic Bishop’s Conference of the Philippines called us to be more sensitive in acting against poverty as a “Social Scandal” faced by our country.

According to the bishops, we cannot help but to admit that twenty-eight percent of our people find it hard to live day by day.

Basic education, fundamental aspects of the economy, the struggle for elusive peace in Mindanao, war against the corruption and the shameful slimed uncovered in connection with now unconstitutional Priority Development Assistance Fund (PDAF) , these are the recognized advances in  Philippine society.

One of the serious social scandals is the PDAF as a very controversial fight against corruption. The alleged Pork Barrel Scam mastermind Janet-Lim Napoles channelled some P10 billion of government funds into ghost projects over the past 10 year’s. The funds were allegedly sourced from the PDAF or the pork barrel finances for pet projects of senators and members of the House of Representatives.

Because of corruption, many Filipinos are being affected. The poor family remain poorer.

As the Filipino citizens, the CBCP encouraged us to act and be responsible enough for the upheaval faced by our country. The CBCP wants us to understand our role and personal responsibility.

Greed for money is also among the reasons of the poverty.

“Money is a means. It’s not an end. Greediness is a sin,” the bishops said.
