The Price of Catholic Media

It is not just for the sake of having a newspaper, radio, internet or any media of communications that the Archdiocese of Davao continues and plans to operate. But it is Christ who commands us: Go therefore, and make disciples of all nations.

Since Vatican II (1963-1965), the Church has already mandated local Churches to maximize the use of social communications and mass media. “Religious programs that utilize all the resources of radio and television and social media enrich people’s religious life and create new bonds between the faithful.” (Inter Mirifica 153)

If other sects and denominations are aggressive in putting up means of social communications, as Catholics we need to be challenged, too. “It would be shameful if by their inactivity Catholics allowed the word of God to be silenced or obstructed by the technical difficulties which these media present and by their admittedly enormous cost….  The Church must continue, in spite of the many difficulties involved, to develop, maintain, and foster its own specifically Catholic instruments and programs for social communications.”  (Aetatis Novae, 17)
