Patron of Priests

Today is St. John Baptiste Marie Vianney Sunday. The universal Church remembers this compassionate confessor and spiritual counselor. His life serves as an inspiration to us all, priests and laity alike.

First, no matter how many times he failed in class, his determination has not failed. His humility enabled him to reach his dream of serving God in the priesthood. This must also make us determined as we pursue holiness in our various vocations despite our failures.

Second, even if he spent tedious hours in hearing confessions, his patience becomes like a magnet for penitents to gather around him. Known as “Cure de Ars” in France, may his endurance teach us to listen more and talk less as we relate with others.

And thirdly, although he might not have been gifted with high intellectual capacity, God used Him for sinners to feel His compassion. Let us also allow God to help us discover our own giftedness and talents for the benefit of our fellow men and women.

St. John Baptiste Marie Vianney, pray for us!
