Student Government—Ateneo de Davao Community

Is Student Government still important to a school campus?

“Student Governments are the vanguards of thestudents,” current president of the student government of Ateneo de Davao University, Mr. Regel Kent Asuero said.

It is the primary role and main thrust of a student council to lobby students’ concerns and issues. Moreover, it is for the student government to secure that they are delivering such services properly. It is the representation of the studentry.  Further, it is for the student government to improve and advance the interests of the students in a university.

However, we cannot perfect a student government.  “There will always be challenges,” current moderator of Ateneo de Davao University’s student government, Mr. Lunar Tan-Fayloga said. “Students’ apathy is increasing,” he added.

During the Marcos’ regime, the presence of active involvement for student government and engagement to social issues was very visible. Today, there is already a certain decline towards inspiring students engaging them to social matters.

“But I want you to highlight this, I am so hopeful,” Mr. Fayloga said. There is no such thing as perfect government hence; it is a continual challenge for student leaders to raise social activeness within the students.

For a government to work, there should be a coherent relationship between its people and the management. It is a mutual thing. Just like in every school and university, a student government cannot have its visible effectiveness without the participation of the students.

Now, this is the challenge to all student governments—to decrease the apathetic spirit of the students. It is undeniably true that there is a rise of apolitical spirits among the studentry. With that, a thought in mind whether or not there still should be a student government in a school campus has been raised.

Consequently, with all these, there is still indeed a need for student government to be present in every school and university. For with out it, there would be no or less opportunities for the students to be involved and engaged to active leadership and social interest.

The more apathy there is, the more there is a recognized need for student governments leading as vanguards for the studentry.

The importance of a student government profoundly lies in the hope of the students.
