Are we being a slave of technology?

It is not surprising that people are getting amazed by how technology is evolving nowadays. It has become a normal routine for us that while we are in an important gathering, we send text messages to other people, send tweets or stalk at someone’s timeline in Facebook, like and upload likeable pictures in Instagram, shop online, and read electronic newspaper – all in the same time.

In today’s generation, we can see the teenagers checking if their crushes liked and commented on their posts on Instagram and/or Facebook, constantly posting Tweets and hoping that someone hops in to what they post, watching the latest music videos of their favorite artists, or finding out the winning score of their favorite NBA team on their smartphone, tablet, or laptop. However, this habit could be a harm to both self and society.

Recent studies have shown that users who are addicted to technology are experiencing insomnia, and it has also been linked to stress and other psychological disorder such as depression, and loneliness. These are commonly seenin teenagers of today.

In another survey, 81% of teenagers are using social networking sites, 78% are online gamers, and 67% are smartphone users.

One study also shows that a typical teenager nowadays usually sends and receives nearly 4,000 text messages per month.

The worst part is that technology is consuming too much time and it could potentiallydamage the youth’s development as a human being.

The people who belong to the older generation are worrying if today’s youth and the incoming generation will become less interested in face-to-face interactions, such as reading body language or feeling empathy.

Technology has been beneficial in many ways. Some parents point out that social-networking sites have been helpful in starting friendships for the youth who are too shy to interact in person and in communicating with the relatives overseas. But is technology the youth to be a slave?

Being exposed to technology every minute of every day is just too much. It would be better if we change our approach towards technology, and set a good example so that the next generation will not be socially and emotionally inept.

“Being a slave of technology is to be focused too much on gadgets and forgetting to socialize with other people”
