The Commemoration Of All The Faithful Departed

Tradition tells us that November, especially All Souls’ Day,  is a time for visiting the graves of our loved ones. Flowers, candles, food and prayers are so common an offering in observing these days. All of these are manifestations of our faith in our communion with the faithful departed. But as the highest form prayer, nothing can equal the offering of masses for our beloved dead.

“The bodies of the dead must be treated with respect and charity, in faith and hope of the Resurrection. The burial of the dead is a corporal work of mercy; it honors the children of God, who are temples of the Holy Spirit” (CCC 2300). We await for a reunion with them when our time comes.

As we visit cemeteries today, may we be reminded of the shortness of life. May our observance of all soul’s day inspire us to give our lives to others while still able, for as Pope Francis says, life grows and matures only when it is given away for others.
