This appointment is valid immediately until the new bishop takes possession of the diocese, or the revocation of the apostolic administrator or the revocation of whoever governs during the sede vacante, an expression used in Canon Law of the Catholic Church that refers to the vacancy of the Episcopal See of a particular church.

“My expectation from the newly-appointed priests for different commissions and offices is they will do their tasks accordingly during this period of sede vacante. We should help one another especially now that there is no bishop in the diocese,” said Rev. Fr. Edito S. Baño, the apostolic administrator of the diocese.

With the limited faculty as apostolic administrator, Fr. Bano cannot assign parish priest yet in a particular church or parish until one year from the date of appointment, if there is still sede vacante, he clarified. However, he can assign assistant parish priests.

Last October 19, 2014, along with the acceptance of the resignation of Most Reverend Patricio Alo, D.D. as bishop of Mati, the Holy See (Vatican) appointed Rev. Fr. Edito S. Baño as the apostolic administrator. He will temporarily function as head of the diocese.

Bishop Emeritus Alo presided over the Chrism Mass last Holy Thursday joined by 37 priests both from diocesan clergy and religious congregations. Currently, there are 40 priests from diocesan clergy with 3 Augustinian Fathers, 2 Camillian Fathers, 3 Don Bosco Fathers and 2 Vocationist Fathers.

The Diocese of Mati has 19 parishes.
