Phil. Eagle savors freedom on Independence Day

The Philippine eagle named PAMANA was released in the wilderness of Mt. Hamiguitan, San Isidro, Davao Oriental, as the Filipino nation celebrated its 117th Independence Day, on June 12, 2015. The 3-year old Phil. Eagle came from Iligan City, and was restored to life after almost succumbing to two gunshot wounds. After the procedures were followed and assessment done, the Philippine Eagle Foundation decided it was time for the eagle to flap her wings again in the wild. And the foundation found it most appropriate to release the endangered species in the vastness of Mt. Hamiguitan, the UNESCO world heritage site, also celebrating its one year anniversary of inscription to the prestigious list of the heritage sites on June 23, 2015. The Philippine Eagle Foundation, Governor Corazon Malanyaon, Mayor Tina Yu also representing the San Isidro parish pastoral council, and other provincial and local officials, department heads, locals, religious groups, and the media flocked to the Mt. Hamiguitan Eco Park where PAMANA was released and witnessed how she flew for the first time after she was declared as “good as new”. Famous environmentalist and TV personality Kim Atienza opened the cage where the eagle was placed. Upon opening, she flew immediately and made a stop and rested, mindful of her surroundings, and after several minutes, flew again to the delight of the crowd, cheering and celebrating her being back to the wild where she rightfully belongs.

PAMANA is hoped to find male Phil. Eagle “Cabuaya” so they could propagate and raise a family of their own. “Cabuaya” is the child of “Cabu” and “Aya”, whose love nest is in the wilderness of Brgy. Cabuaya in the City of Mati, now considred as a Phil. Eagle sanctuary. The Phil. Eagle Foundation has high hopes on PAMANA’s chance of survival in Mt. Hamiguitan, primarily because it is a highly protected area with a better level of enforcement and awareness. Thirty-five (35) eagles are now under the care of the Phil. Eagle Foundation, while Davao Oriental as yet, serves as habitat to 3 to 10 pairs of Phil. Eagles.
