‘Stay in classroom not enough’ – Prof

THE decreasing rate of licensure exam passers from Davao City was cited as an urgent concern in which the United Future Educators of Davao (UFED) wants to address since its inception in 2004. An organization of 10,000 education students from 13 colleges and schools in Davao City, UFED moderator Mr. Roberto Miclat said that conducting student congress outside the classroom to teach them process and pass (the licensure exam) is a must.

“Pahirap nang pahirap ang licensure exam, but UFED will continue to be a venue and training ground for future educators,” he added. “In fact, I want to elevate this organization to be recognized by the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) and the Council of Deans for Teacher Education in Region XI. Meantime, there are schools that are yet participating because of this.”

Alarmed by the turn-outs, Miclat hopes to include in the discussion other pressing issues. “We want UFED to be an initiating organization that caters and promotes, and will serve as a training ground of future educators of Davao that concerns education, research, licensure examination, and classroom management.” Student-teacher Maria Cristina Dumandan of SPCT agrees on the proposed symposium saying, “kulang na kase ang knowledge ng mga students ngayon kase they focus more on social media like Facebook and Twitter. Most of their ideas are shallow since they are not exposed to the real world.”

The said congress is said to guide the examinees as they “prepare in the real battle like curriculum management. The stay in the classroom is not enough,” ended Miclat.

Though the result of September 27, 2015 Licensure Examination for Teachers shows a topnotcher in secondary level category from a university here, things are needed to be worked out as majority of Davao’s schools aim to be part of the top performing schools’ list of the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) and the Board for Professional Teachers (BPT). The over-all percentages in 2015 reveal that only 21,461 elementary teachers out of 68,442 examinees (31.36%) and 34,010 secondary teachers out of 81,463 examinees (41.75%) passed the Licensure Examination for Teachers (L.E.T.).
