Vigilant users of media

Voting and Social MediaAs in the past, the means of social communications played an important role in making those who run for public office land in their desired position. We saw here and abroad how social media or new media in particular, was able to influence voters’ choice.

But how mature are our citizens in using the present media? Are our electorate prepared to maximize the good use of the media today? Do we have the smooth transition of being used to be passive consumers to vigilant users of contemporary media?

“It is necessary that all members of society meet the demands of justice and charity in this domain. They should help, through the means of social communication, in the formation and diffusion of sound public opinion” (Inter Mirifica 8).

Since through the use of digital media today everyone can be a journalist, each one “should strive with equal care, the nature of the facts and the limits of critical judgment concerning the individuals” (CCC 2497).

We all need to practice moderation and discipline in our approach to civic journalism.
