Detour

Have you ever felt abandoned by God? Let us learn from the story of Isa, a member of Singles for Christ, Tagum Chapter.

After finishing high school, my parents and I were so worried since they might not send me to college anymore. During that time, my dad’s company got closed and that affected our family’s finances. It is too late for me also to look and apply for scholarship grants since it was around April and all slots are probably taken. So, I stopped schooling.

That was very hard for me to stop schooling since I spent all my life in school. My parents never asked me to do the laundry and wash the dishes since they wanted me to focus on my studies. As a way of paying back, I strived even more to bring them home with recognitions and medals. I spent all year after that staying at home and crying every night. I asked God, “What happened; why is this happening to me?”

After a year of despair and misery, one day an opportunity knocked. A scholarship from a foundation managed by a German priest came into the scene. By God’s grace, I got the grant and managed to enroll in a state university.

Before, I was thinking of taking an engineering program but I realized that it would take me 5 years or more to finish it. My concern was to finish college as soon as possible so I ended up with my second choice — education. After four school years, I was able to complete my tertiary education and by God’s grace, I was awarded as one of cum laudes. I realized that it was really the teaching profession which suits me the best. Now, I could not even imagine myself as an engineer. I thank God for redirecting my plans, my journey, my life. He is really the one who knows what’s best for me, for you, for everyone. ‘Twas maybe a tough “detour” for me but it was then the right path for me to arrive in my best and true destination. All glory and honor belongs to God!
