Suffering Mothers

Mama Mary PietaWhat does it mean to be a mother without an experience of suffering? This includes nine months before a baby is born, sleepless nights of feeding the newborn babe, guidance in adolescence, accompaniment in starting a new career and in establishing one’s own family. In all these moments and even beyond, a mother is always there to care.

Mothers have unique and necessary suffering. St. Monica is one example as she endured and remained humble praying for years for the conversion of her son, Augustine, for her pagan husband, Patricius and her mother-in-law. Mama Mary showed firmness of heart in bearing the Son of God, in accompanying him in his public ministry and in remaining by his side in Calvary and the cross. Our Holy Mother Church continues to suffer with her children because they who aspire for unity, truth and perfection are beset by division, hypocrisy and weakness.

Let us offer prayers today for mothers who are working abroad deprived of presence of their beloved children. We pray for mothers who, after sacrificing many things, know the failure of their expected children to graduate in school. We pray for mothers who wish their children to reconcile with each other. Whatever way mothers suffer, we need to pray for them so that the sweet reward of their selfless love may be theirs.

Mama Mary pray for us!
