The Curé of Ars and the Grandeur of Priesthood
Seldom has a priestly life been so holy, so self-sacrificing, so fruitful for the salvation of souls as the life of the Holy Curé of Ars, Saint John Mary Vianney, Patron of Priests.
As this year is declared by the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of the Philippines (CBCP) as the Year of the Clergy and Consecrated Persons, St. John Mary Vianney, whose feast is celebrated on the 4th of August, continues to inspire and to challenge those who dedicate their lives for salus animarum, the salvation of souls.
Known to be very humble and dedicated to his priestly duties, St. John Mary Vianney held with high esteem the grandeur of priesthood. For him, a pastor after God’s heart is the greatest treasure which the good Lord can grant to a parish. This unfathomable mystery of priesthood is a gift entrusted to humanity despite the defects and limitations of human nature.
In the modern world, a better understanding and deep appreciation of the Catholic priesthood suffer some setbacks even within the Catholic Church, but especially among her critics. We see how the Catholic Church is continually being attacked from all ranks through the weaknesses of her ministers. Yet, whatever assault she may have received, the truth remains that priesthood is still “the love of the heart of Jesus.”
Today, more than ever, when the identity and mission of priests, are not only misunderstood, but also challenged and even dishonored, the relevance of St. John Mary Vianney can help bring back the grandeur of priesthood.
